The 3-2 Nap Transition Explained

Oct 16, 2023

Around 6-9ish months old your baby will likely be ready to move from 3-2 naps per day (yay!!!)

The timing is different for every baby, obvi, but most commonly this happens between 7-9 months or so.

So HOW do you know when it's time... well, here are a few things to look out for:⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

1. More frequent night wakings (that are new)

2. Short naps, fighting naps, or refusing that last nap

3. Early morning wakings (from too much daytime sleep)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

You don't want to make this change too early, so make sure you're noticing a consistent pattern for 2 weeks before making a big change, or it could cause more sleep struggles.⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

How do I do this? Well, it's quite simple!

You just increase their daily awake times slowly as tolerated. This could be an extra 15-30 minutes per day.

Often, I find that the morning wake time before the first nap continues to be shorter, as the second and third wake times increase. They may need an early bedtime at first as they adjust. ⠀⠀⠀⠀

Expect this to take a few weeks of adjustment. It's a big change, and likely to set them back a little sleep wise. Give yourself a break if they are having a hard time with naps.... try not to worry, they'll get back on track in a couple of days/weeks.

Are your baby's naps just a constant disaster? I've been there too...

But it's time for nap time to feel liberating, calm, and cozy. With a plan that will help your baby LOVE to nap more than 32 minutes in their crib.
