False Starts in Baby Sleep: Why They Happen & How to Prevent Them
"False starts" — the term you might have never heard until you find yourself facing them at 2 a.m. π If you’re a parent, there’s a good chance you’ll experience this frustrating issue at some point. So, what exactly are false starts in baby sleep?
A false start happens when you put your baby to bed, and they fall asleep just fine, but after 30-45 minutes (the length of a full sleep cycle), they wake up crying and refuse to go back to sleep. It feels like your baby treated bedtime as if it were a nap! This situation is one of the most frustrating sleep challenges parents face, and I’m here to help explain why it happens and what you can do about it.
What Causes False Starts in Baby Sleep?
False starts in baby sleep are commonly caused by two things: overtiredness and undertiredness. Understanding the difference between these two will help you tackle the issue with confidence. But don’t worry — false starts are actually quite common, and it doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong! Babies are very sensitive to their sleep needs, and sometimes, no matter how prepared you are, life can throw off their sleep schedule. π
The Science Behind False Starts
Overtiredness is often the main culprit when it comes to false starts. When a baby is overtired, their cortisol levels (the stress hormone) rise, making it harder for them to settle down. The body becomes "hyper-alert," which makes it difficult for babies to fall asleep or stay asleep.
However, undertiredness can also be a factor. If your baby isn’t tired enough by bedtime, their body doesn’t build enough sleep pressure to stay asleep, leading to false starts.
What Can You Do About False Starts?
I know how overwhelming it can be to face false starts night after night. But don’t worry, there are practical solutions! Here are a few simple tips to help you prevent false starts and create a smoother bedtime routine:
-
Adjust Bedtime by 15-20 Minutes Earlier
If false starts are occurring frequently, try adjusting bedtime by 15-20 minutes earlier for a few days. This small tweak can help your baby fall asleep more easily and stay asleep longer. -
Check Daytime Sleep
Is your baby getting the right amount of age-appropriate naps during the day? Lack of daytime sleep or an inconsistent nap schedule can lead to overtiredness by bedtime, contributing to false starts. Aim for a consistent nap schedule to ensure they’re well-rested before bed. -
Revisit the Basics of Sleep
Sometimes, going back to basics is the key! Make sure your baby’s sleep environment is optimized — it should be dark, quiet, and cool. Also, revisit your bedtime routine. A consistent routine helps signal to your baby that it’s time to sleep.

I know false starts can be frustrating, but remember — it’s all part of the learning process. Don’t be too hard on yourself! Whether you’re a first-time parent or you’ve been through this before, it takes time to find the right rhythm for your baby.
