Short Car Naps Ruining Your Routine? —Try This!
Jun 06, 2025
Because one rogue car nap shouldn't hijack your whole day.
You’ve been timing naps to the minute, following wake windows like a maniac and maybe...just maybe...you were about to have a smooth day.
Then it happens.
Your baby nods off for nine measly minutes in the flippin' car.
Just enough to ruin the real nap you had planned. 😩
If this has ever sent you into a quiet, panicked spiral (I have 100% been there mate 🙋♀️), you're not alone.
In fact, evidence suggests even a 10-minute car nap can reduce sleep pressure enough to delay the next nap by hours—especially in sensitive or low-sleep-need babies.
Why the heck is a 10-minute car nap enough to ruin what might usually be a 1–3 hour nap?
When your baby wakes up, their “sleep cup” starts filling slowly but steadily with sleep pressure.. Once the cup fills up, it’s time for a nap to empty it and reset their rhythm.
Babies and toddlers need frequent naps because their cups fill quickly but also empty fast during sleep.
But even a 10-minute car nap can release just enough of that pressure that they no longer feel the same need to nap when you get home.
Don’t Let a Car Nap Wreck the Day—Here’s What to Do Instead
Car naps can throw off your baby’s whole nap routine…but they don’t have to.
Here are three ways to handle car naps without spiraling: based on your baby’s age, temperament, and what kind of day you’re working with.
Option 1: The Transfer (aka the Unicorn Move)
If your baby is younger than six months—or you’ve got a rare transfer unicorn—you might be able to move them from the car seat to the crib without waking them.
Pro tips for a smooth car nap transfer:
✦ Keep white noise running
✦ Use a dark room
✦ Gently unbuckle and scoop without changing their position too much
🚨 This usually only works with newborns or babies in deep sleep. For older babies… Proceed with caution and low expectations .I’m not gonna lie my girls rarely did this after like 3 months, lol. But so many babies can so it is worth a try!
Option 2: Just Own It Mate…
If the transfer fails or feels way too risky, you might just have to call it.
That 20–45 minute car nap is now... the actual nap.
So what now:
✦ Stay calm (yes, this is still a win)
✦ Offer a second nap later if your baby seems tired
✦ Or bump bedtime earlier to avoid overtired meltdown
Try and make the most of it… go to the Starbucks drive-thru and give yourself a little treat. Or head to Macca’s for a crispy diet coke and some fries. Don’t let it ruin your day mentally!! Tomorrow is a new day ok!!
Option 3: Wake Them + Rebuild Sleep Pressure
This one’s for the micro-naps—those sneaky 5–10 minute baby car naps that steal just enough sleep to sabotage the next nap.
Here’s how to reset your baby’s nap schedule:
- Gently wake them as soon as you get home
- Keep them awake and engaged for 30–90 minutes (depending on age and how much awake time they can handle – you can learn more about age-appropriate wake windows here.)
✦ Light play
✦ Snack or feed
✦ Outside time or stroller walk - Watch for sleepy cues—rubbing eyes, zoning out, fussiness
- Try the nap again like usual
Even a short car nap can “take the edge off” their sleep drive—but with a little activity, you can totally rebuild it and get a decent nap.
Bottom Line: Baby Car Naps Happen—You’ve Got Options
No matter how perfectly you plan, car naps and nap disruptions are part of the parenting gig.
Instead of spiraling (been there), take a breath and choose the recovery strategy that fits today best.
